Getting high in Arcachon

To see a city more widely, what better than to gain height to have a breathtaking panorama? In Arcachon, there are many places that allow you to gain height and have a stunning view of the landscape! So bring good walking shoes, a camera and something to hydrate, because it’s still hot on the Arcachon Basin.

The Belvedere of Arcachon, a 360-degree view

In the Ville d’Hiver, next to the Mauresque Park, you can go to the Belvedere of Arcachon which allows you, once at the top, to enjoy one of the most beautiful panoramas of the city. Also known as the Observatory of St. Cecile, it rises to 15 meters in height. Its spiral staircase allows you to climb quickly, but beware: the number of people allowed at the top of the platform is limited. So make sure for the comfort of all not to linger at the top, at the risk of attracting the wrath of the people waiting downstairs! From above, you can see the city in its entirety, from the promenade that runs along the beach to the pine forest, nothing will escape you! Its access is free, and accessible from 7am to 10pm during the summer, and from 9am to 7pm all the rest of the year.

Special mention for the Mauresque Park, where the view is also very beautiful, and where the iconic elevator drops you in the axis of one of the most used busy streets, then reach the edge of the beach. Stroll through the Park, among the flowers, the rose garden or stay next to the Pinasse and admire the Basin!

The Dune du Pilat, the great ascent

If you’ve ever been to Arcachon during your vacation, you’ve probably climbed the Pilat Dune. During the summer, this place is a must. Europe’s tallest Dune is more than 100 metres high and once at the top you can enjoy a breathtaking landscape. As far as the eye can see on one side, you will see the pine forest, and on the other side the Banc d’Arguin and its multitudes of shades of blue. A popular outing for families, the Dune du Pilat is a reference for a successful holiday. The more seasoned can try to climb directly in the sand, the more laid will also be able to climb, but by taking the stairs specially put in addition during the season.  Discover or rediscover this unique landscape, much appreciated by photographers or for nature lovers. Rejuvenate at the top, and enjoy the unspeakable sunset. You can spend the day there, at the foot of the Dune, you will find restaurants that will serve you delicious fried mussels, and on the other side, the beach allows you to cool off before going up.

You will understand that. The Arcachon Basin is full of small treasures, unusual places to discover or opportunities to gain height to admire landscapes that one can’t imagine. These places will leave you with wonderful memories, so many reasons to come back and see how everything evolves. Because you can come every year, you will always be as dazzled by the landscape, as a rediscovery…
